Laws vary wildly in the campaign setting.
The Draconic Codex is a famous set of laws that was at the basics of the rules used by the Alskar Empire at its inception - although very few scholars would admit to that origin and no one beyond the most studious of the Chroniclers are even remotely aware of that connection. Still, the Codex is still in use, vastly unchanged Jinjaia, supposedly, in the Dragon Realms beyond Gazarro.
The laws of the Alskar Empire influence its inheritors, from the Suluum Theocracy to Vausi, passing by Kaoteria and even some of the Elven and Dwarven lands. Those involve the respect of private property, the sanctified status of the nobles named by an annointed sovereign and the autonomy of the clergy.
This is all made more complicate by the autonomy of each landholder to promote his own laws on his territory if they don't contradict any of the so-called Essential Laws of landholder's lord.
Law Enforcers[]
Two institutions are notable for their power in enforcing the law in the Theocracy:
- The Purgers: These are members of the Church charged with the finding and, most importantly, the excision of the unholy and the heretic from world. Based on the Temple of Helios Sanctissimum in the Theocracy's capital city, the Purgers do not recognize political borders as limitation on their divine duty of expunging evil. Purgers are often called Inquisitors and, sometimes, Incendiaries. They only answer to the High Prelate of Suluum. In addition to their duties of seeking demons and heretics, the Purgers were also, up to a few years ago, responsible for enforcing the Vallorian Pact, which forbade the use of letters throughout the old Alskar domains.
- Lightbringers: Secular investigators responsible for seeking lawbreakers in any of the lands of the Theocracy. Their authority goes above that of any landholder - but not above that of the clergy - and they are entitled, when on an official mission, to commandeer any form of private property to meet their ends. They are based on the Scarlet Keep in Suluum and answer to the Lord of the City and the Land (which has been the High Prelate for the last 300 years, except for two short periods of less than 20 years each).
Laws in Anspara[]
Cardalus III, the current Marquis of Anspara March, is held as a sour old men. He changed several laws since he rose to the throne. Most notable amongs those are:
- Prohibition of music in public places.
- Interdiction of troupes of actors and artists from entering the lands of the March.
- Forbidding of the use of magic except by practioners personally sanctioned by the Marquis.
